Host Gator’s new service, SEOHosting.com, enables customers to optimize their web sites for search engines by hosting on multiple C classes.

Host Gator reports that they were constantly getting asked about multiple C Class capabilities because of peoples belief that Google and other search engines will penalize websites that have the same C Class and are linking to each other.

Brent Oxley, President and Founder of Host Gator remarked,

“Host Gator is always listening to its customers and we strive to do all we can to meet their needs, especially in niche areas such as this. This is a truly a fantastic offering for webmasters and web publishers that want to do everything they can to optimize their web sites for search engines. None of our competitors can match our combination of both this technical capability and our rock solid hosting infrastructure.”

C Class hosting will be offered for as low as $5.00 per C Class per month. If you’re a power user and end up with more than 50 C Classes, you’ll be assigned an account representative.

Most of my sites are hosted by Host Gator and I have switched over many of my higher traffic sites to a dedicated C Class. This is really handy because I no longer have to deal with different hosting providers to overcome my paranoia of being penalized by the search engines and can now consolidate all my sites on SEO Hosting.

The basic package includes 5 C Classes for $35/month, 20 GB of diskspace and 200 GB of Bandwidth. 500 C Classes a month will cost you a hefty $235/month. Their packages are flexible and come with all the expected goodies such as Fantastico, Stat/Logs, Instant Backups, Unlimited Email Accounts and much more.

You want more traffic. Great. Who doesn’t?

You’ll surely never get more traffic to your site if you see the words Untitled Page in your title bar. I know this is basic knowledge, but you wouldn’t believe how many people ask me why they get no visitors to their site, and then I check their URL and find things link Untitled Page. So I decided to create this basic list to help beginning webmasters get on the Search Engine Optimization ball. The following mistakes will have a major negative impact on your web page rankings so avoid them at all costs:

Specifying no title for your page:

The title of your web page is crucial. Failing to specify a descriptive, keyword optimized title will do damage to your search engine ranking. It’s kind of like owning a brick and mortar shop and boarding up all the windows. Each page on your site should have a unique, content-specific title.

If you use WordPress I highly recommend you add the SEO Title Tag 1.0 plugin to your arsenal. This plugin will allow you to override a page’s or a post’s title tag with a custom one defined through a custom field, in your WordPress admin.

Convinced yet? Then Download this FREE plugin!

Excessive use of Flash animation and images on a page:

If your web page has plenty of nice-looking graphics and eye-popping Flash animation and not a lot of textual content it may indeed look nice, but have you ever considered how the search engines will see it? Search engines thrive on textual content, indexing as much text as they can, but unfortunately they cannot understand images or Flash animations. They will find nothing of real value on your page. Try to balance your page so that the textual content is given priority and that any images or animations are used only when needed. Also us the ALT tag as much as possible. Search engines use this text when determining rank. ALT tags are simple to add and there’s no excuse for passing up another opportunity to rank your site. Go back right now and tag your images with content rich keywords.

Complicated JavaScript menu systems:

Search engines spiders that crawl through our pages are clunky robots. They find it very hard to navigate complicated JavaScript, Java applet menu systems. Don’t assume that because a human can navigate a menu that the search engine spiders will do the same. A menu system using simple textual links will be easier for a spider to read and it will then successfully navigate your site. Try using textual links or CSS when creating expandable or tricky menus.

If you simply must use a javascript or flash based menu or have recently implemented one and refuse to change it, you should consider making the following small change. Add contextual links to the bottom of your pages to ensure that the spiders will be able to find the pages on your site.

P.s. Try to avoid frames as well. They are usually completely pointless and robots will index your site a lot faster and more accurately if leave them be.

Where do you begin when it comes to optimizing your site for search engines? There are numerous SEO adjustments to be made to your typical out-of-the-box blog theme. Of course we are all about simplicity around here so let’s focus on the single most important change you can make.

Make your titles dynamic. How do we do this? Well, it’s easier than it sounds.

Why is the title the most important SEO change you can make? Because people like titles & search engines like titles. We scan through those large blue search engine titles until we see one that sparks our interest, when we do, we then scan over the copy a bit and if we like what we see we click the tiltle. Search engines are also a lover of titles and we all love what the search engines love…. a good title.

It’s time to take control of your blog’s titles with the wonderful WordPress plugin SEO Title Tag 1.0 by Stephan Spencer.

This plugin allows you to use the titles of your post as the title for your page. I say allow because you can still choose to use your site’s name or set SEO Title Tag 1.0 to display your blog’s name before or after the title… we want the latter.

We all love our own company name, especially as entrepreneurs, but let’s face it, unless you are a house-hold name or a very well known corporation, no one will be searching your company name to find an article, product or service. You want to use the blog post’s title because hopefully, and it is up to you, it is your best description of the content at hand and it is loaded with keywords.

There are many terms used in Search Engine Optimization that can be confusing. SEOmoz has posted “A Complete Glossary of Essential SEO Jargon.” We have included a few of our favorite terms:

Astroturfing (the opposite of full disclosure) attempting to advance a commercial or political agenda while pretending to be an impartial grassroots participant in a social group. Participating in a user forum with the secret purpose of branding, customer recruitment, or public relations.

Canonical Issues (duplicate content) canon = legitimate or official version - It is often nearly impossible to avoid duplicate content, especially with CMSs like Wordpress, but also due to the fact that www.site.com, site.com, and www.site.com/index.htm are supposedly seen as dupes by the SEs - although it’s a bit hard to believe they aren’t more sophisticated than that. However these issues can be dealt with effectively in several ways including - using the noindex meta tag in the non-canonical copies, and 301 server redirects to the canon.

Google Dance The change in SERPs caused by an update of the Google database or algorithm. The cause of great angst and consternation for webmasters who slip in the SERPs. Or, the period of time during a Google index update when different data centers have different data.

Keyword Cannibalization The excessive reuse of the same keyword on too many web pages within the same site. This practice makes it difficult for the users and the search engines to determine which page is most relevant for the keyword.

LSI(Latent Semantic Indexing) This mouthful just means that the search engines index commonly associated groups of words in a document. SEOs refer to these same groups of words as “Long Tail”. The majority of searches consist of three or more words strung together. See also “long tail”. The significance is that it might be almost impossible to rank well for “mortgage”, but fairly easy to rank for “second mortgage to finance monster truck team”

Mashup A web page which consists primarily of single purpose software and other small programs (gizmos and gadgets) or possibly links to such programs. Mashups are quick and easy content to produce and are often popular with users, and can make good link bait. Tool collection pages are sometimes mashups.

Pagerank (PR) a value between 0 and 1 assigned by the Google algorithm, which quantifies link popularity and trust among other (proprietary) factors. Often confused with Toolbar Pagerank. - Previous Definition revised based upon advice from Michael Martinez

Web 2.0 Is characterized by websites, which encourage user interaction.

Here are a few more of the best SEO glossaries we have bookmarked:

SEO Book’s Glossary - Extensive list of SEO terms
SEO Glossary - SEO Glossary that contains about 200 definitions.
Apogee Search SEO Jargon - Glossary of terms (jargon, really) seen in the Search Engine Marketing industry

Today we are going to discuss link building. Link building requires a consistent commited effort and is easily the most difficult, time consuming part of SEO. I have created a list of some of the most commonly used link building techniques.

Directories
Still one of the tried and true ways of building back links is to submit to directories. Remember the importance of titles and descriptions when submitting and carefully weave your keywords in. You should be able to build around 100 backlinks with all the directories out there. Here are a few useful lists:

- 40 Top Web Directories listed by quantity of dir.yahoo, dmoz, edu, and gov links.
- 311 Reciprocal Web Directories
- 271 Non-Reciprocal Free Web Directories

Forums
People are touchy about this one. Forums are a great place to generate backlinks if you are bringing something to the table or adding to the discussion in some way. It’s perfectly fine to add a backlink in your signature… don’t embed animated banners or annoying blinking neon links. Offering no real advice or failing to add some meat to the discussion, while at the same time leaving your link all over the place is considered spamming. It’s ok to promote as long as you contribute.

Browse forums that are obviously relevant to your blog. And if you see a question asked that you know the answer to don’t be afraid to drop a link to your site that answers the question. A common stragedy is to partially answer the question and then link to the appropriate page on your blog that goes into more detail. Don’t forget to read the forum rules so you don’t get banned for advertising.
