Social vs Referral Traffic

This question is a very good one. Social networks like Digg and del.icio.us are great for traffic and have been known to bring many newbies’ blogs to their knees.

Digg traffic can be great, but I find that traffic levels generally return to average levels after a digg or delicious traffic rush has died down. I do think however that if you can consistently get dugg then you will notice the traffic levels will increase after each digg worthy post. You can then learn how to use this traffic to your blogs advantage. Very often traffic from social networks is exciting, but these types of visitors generally don’t become loyal readers.

Referral traffic from bloggers or other websites is better traffic in my opinion because if the traffic is from a blogger, he is probably saying nice things about you to readers who are probably going to want to read what you have to say. Referral traffic is more likely to convert into RSS readers or newsletter subscribers.
