Link Building

Today we are going to discuss link building. Link building requires a consistent commited effort and is easily the most difficult, time consuming part of SEO. I have created a list of some of the most commonly used link building techniques.

  1. Directories
Still one of the tried and true ways of building back links is to submit to directories. Remember the importance of titles and descriptions when submitting and carefully weave your keywords in. You should be able to build around 100 backlinks with all the directories out there. Here are a few useful lists:

    - 40 Top Web Directories listed by quantity of dir.yahoo, dmoz, edu, and gov links.
    - 311 Reciprocal Web Directories
    - 271 Non-Reciprocal Free Web Directories

  2. Forums
People are touchy about this one. Forums are a great place to generate backlinks if you are bringing something to the table or adding to the discussion in some way. It’s perfectly fine to add a backlink in your signature… don’t embed animated banners or annoying blinking neon links. Offering no real advice or failing to add some meat to the discussion, while at the same time leaving your link all over the place is considered spamming. It’s ok to promote as long as you contribute.

Browse forums that are obviously relevant to your blog. And if you see a question asked that you know the answer to don’t be afraid to drop a link to your site that answers the question. A common stragedy is to partially answer the question and then link to the appropriate page on your blog that goes into more detail. Don’t forget to read the forum rules so you don’t get banned for advertising.

  3. Ariticle Writing and Submission
Writing original, thought provoking copy about your particular subject matter is another proven way to build links to your site. So why not write articles for sites that are willing to linkback? Many websites entire business model is to host articles written by people like you and providing a link back to them. Here’s a few of the biggest article hosing sites:

Search on the web for more articles sites that are related to you subject matter or industry. There are literally hundreds of these types of sites that can be used to spread your links across the web.

  4. Blog Comments
Naturally, blogging is a great way of getting incoming links. Also, by utilizing a the blogging platform we can comment on other blogs in a similar niche to ours and leave a link back to our site. This is a great way of building links back to our blog. If you are a good writer and can offer a unique angle on the discussion you will a steady stream of traffic from leaving comments.

Don’t expect the spiders to index these types of backlinks though. Usually comments are on dynamically created pages and are cosidered a sub, sub link so they aren’t optimized for the search engines. This tragedy of building links through comments on other people’s blogs is to build visitor traffic, not to attract search engines.

Pretty good so far, but you sort of left me hangin’. Why just 3, why not 5? ;-) I’ll check back for the next 5.
